Belly up
Let's talk about a very delicate subject and it seems that there is not much consensus among humans.
The craze you have for laying us on our backs is not cute, not pleasant, not comfortable, or anything .
In fact it is completely unnatural, our normal position is with our feet turned downwards , not upwards.
By putting us in that position, you are triggering an instinctive reaction of survival that we have when we are caught by predators and that is quite unpleasant and even painful for us, you are putting us in a state of tonic immobility , you know what that is?
It is when we go into a state of shock , (see here if you want) we become so tense that we are able to be trapped within our own body, we see, hear, smell, but we cannot move, the body "freezes" and even the breath it slows down and the heart rate changes and our cortisone levels fire, in the end, everything looks like we're dead , because in nature when this happens our predators stop being interested in us and leave us , which gives us the possibility of being able to escape and survive.
We were so terrified that there are reports of fellows bunnies who died, thanks to this joke, because when we stay that so long the heart cannot pump blood properly, due to lack of oxygen and we end up dying , if by chance we already have heart problems or some respiratory problem then that's when it's over, others got serious injuries because when we finally managed to move , we used to make a big leap and often ends badly .
But after reading all this, you will say, "Ah! But my bunny looks so relaxed and so cute, he even closes his eyes", no! He's petrified!
Or you will say "But mine put like this alone, it´s not me!", Yes, we stand with our paws up for a few seconds when we flop , from the very deep ones , from when we are really, really, really relaxed, but, understand something, we are the ones who give, it’s not you who put us like this, it’s different!
Even when you’re going to shear or cut our nails, don’t let them do that to us, okay?
So, my dear humans, I ask you dearly , never put us on our backs, never!
