Toxic Woods
There are still many doubts regarding the wood that can be given or not to the bunnies, we may not always be able to eat the fruit of a certain tree that means that we can eat its trunk or sticks.
I'll talk about some here, the ones that are most common to receive questions:
-What woods are toxic to my bunny? - There are many woods that are toxic to bunnies, many times humans think that as we can eat the fruit of a tree, we can also eat the trunk or the sticks of that tree, but that is wrong.
just because we can eat by determining fruit does not mean that we can eat the wood of this fruit tree.
Examples of this are the "Stone Trees" or the "sone fruits" trees and what are you asking? is a name given to fruits that have a large stone in the middle as if it were a stone, can you already see some fruits like that? So I’m going to talk about some of them here:
Cherry tree- We can eat the cherries without the stone, but that's it, the sticks or trunks or even wooden boards from this tree are not for us.
Plum tree - We can eat without the stone but only the fruit.
Nectarines tree - No tree that gives nectarines is good to gnaw on.
Mango tree - No, it is not that rubber thing you use to water the garden, it is also not good for us to gnaw on, but I am talking about the tree that gives mangoes, we can eat the fruit, but not the wood.
Apricot tree - We can eat the apricots but not the wood.
Peach tree - This is the one that gets me the most questions, we can eat peaches, but that's it, that's all.
Lychees tree - It starts to be very common in Europe this fruit, but it is good for you humans, we stay away from these balls.
And why can we eat the fruits and not the trees? Because the trunks, branches and branches of these trees have cyanide and cyanide is very poisonous not only for us bunnies but also for humans.
Olive tree is also very toxic and in this case can not eat at all, not olives, or leaves, anything (that's why the feed call so often attention to have oil, anything that has olives or something of trees to be given to bunny. Check the rations here if you want).
Almond, Chestnut or Walnut - These are also those that we cannot eat neither the fruits, nor the leaves or anything. It's only going to hurt our tummy and we don't want any of that.
Fig Tree - This one, then, we will make a big cross on top of it, neither figs, nor leaves, nor anything, just a distance away the fig tree will only harm us.
Still in Fruits, we have the Elderberry , I could even tell you that we can, but the truth is that we can of a type of Elderberry, European Elderberries are different from the American ones, some are very toxic, others are not, but do you know how to distinguish one from the other? if you buy wood from this tree, do you know if it is European or American? Let's simplify and put this tree here on the list of those that are not for us.
Then we also have Cedar and Pine , which I already mentioned here, but which I will mention again, they are very, very toxic because they release chemicals that make us ill and end up causing us serious liver problems. The problem is that this wood is often used in furniture and even some toys that are sold as being good for us, but they are not! Nothing that has these woods is good for us, be very careful.
Yew - do you know what it is? whoever does archery should know, this wood is a very malleable and easy to adapt wood and often used to make furniture or arches that have to have some elasticity, this wood has chemicals so strong and bad for us that it can provoke us sudden death, so keep it away from us.
The Holly is toxic to everyone, humans and rabbits, both the wood, such as leaves or berries, be very careful so that we can not have lit to none, not to get intoxicated.
The Eucalyptus is also a tree that serves to be there in her place and to help humans when they have a blocked nose, we will only get us problems, so no branches, leaves or sticks.
Treated or painted wood is also not good for us, we never know what paints it took or what treatments, so if you are going to buy wooden boards for your bunnies always ask if that wood had any type of treatment.
MDF is also not good and increasingly furnishings are made with this material, to be cheaper it is made of bits of various utilized timber and is attached by adhesives, waxes or resins that do us harm beyond that we do not know woods were used.
- Can bunnies eat Bamboo? - Now you got me! I wish I could give you a very concrete answer on this topic, but I can't. There are still many different ideas, on the one hand we have people who say that we can bite bamboo at will, others that it is quite toxic, now what?
Actually Bamboo is not a wood it can be considered a type of herb (yes, they read well), it is very rich in fiber which is good for our tummy, but it is also very rich in starch and sugar and none of that it is good for our tummy, then there are many types of bamboo and even other plants that may look like bamboo but that are not and that are very toxic not only for bunnies but also for humans and other animals. So maybe it’s better not to give your bunny bamboo.
- Can I give my Bunny Eucalyptus to gnaw on? - No, eucalyptus is very bad for us.
- Can my Bunny bite lemon or orange sticks? - Another point that causes some doubts in humans. I can't say that it will kill us if we gnaw, but we shouldn't, if they want to give us a chopstick a lot from time to time, they can, but it has to be really a lot from time to time, it's like the leaves, we can also eat, but most of us don't like it and we don't need it either.
- Can Bunnies gnaw Fig tree sticks? - We don't want anything from Figueira, neither fruit, nor leaves nor sticks.
-What woods are toxic to bunnies? - Many woods are toxic to bunnies, but the most common are Pine, Cedar, Eucalyptus, Almond, Walnut, Olive, Yew, Cherry, Peach, Plum, Hose, Lichieira, MDF, treated or painted woods.
