Ears

Knew that we also communicate through our ears?

They say a lot about what we are feeling or thinking and what we want you to know.

In addition they are like a thermostat, it is through them that we regulate our body temperature, they indicate whether we are hot or cold, that is, if we have very hot or even reddened ears it is because we are very hot or possibly with a fever , you need to be careful to not overheat and have a heart attack , if they are cold it´s because we are cold or sick, in this case if they start to go pale it is because we are going into hypothermia , in extreme cases they can get so cold that they may fall, but this is even in very extreme cases !

So it is important to keep our ears at the same temperature as the rest of our body, if you see that they are too hot you can wet your hands in cold water and pass over our ears to cool , if it is to warm up, it is the same, warm up your hands and put them in our ears to warm up, but there it is also important to warm the rest of the body .

Our little ears are very sensitive , so picking us for them is very, very bad, even to pamper, they must be done very carefully , they are very anatomically complete and you have to be careful, not only with mites but also with infections , but that’s what we ’re talking about here .

We hear very well and our ears can hear independently, so we managed to have one ear facing forward and the other almost entirely facing backwards.

When we are relaxed our ears are more drooped back, we can also put one up and leave another behind, this happens when we are relaxed but we hear something and we are aware of what will be.

When we are asleep if you notice they are completely backwards it also happens when we are really very relaxed.

It is necessary to know how to perceive and distinguish the differences between a resting rabbit and a frightened / aggressive or nervous rabbit.

Curious

orelhas

When we are curious our ears point to the front, some humans say that it looks like we got some horns because they are half curved and stuck in a not too straight angle pointed forward.

If by chance your bunnies do this towards you it is because they are curious about what you are doing or who you are and that is very good, as it shows interest in you, and in terms of bonding with a new bunny it is much less stressful and more stimulating for him, than being held or handled.

Aggressive or Nervous

orelhas

When we are Nervous or aggressive, our little ears turn back and do almost like a 45º angle, as we are trapped, it is very easy for this to happen, because in fact we are afraid of almost everything and almost everything makes us nervous, a way that what helps to understand this state is that together with the ears we have the most prominent eyes, tap the paw and we can emit some sounds (have you seen the sounds here ?) and sometimes even invest and bite. Usually, at these times, we have a place to hide will help.

Alert

orelhas

When we are alert our ears point directly to the sky as if they was an arrow!

When this happens they are usually very tight and close together, sometimes when the sounds come from different places or in the meantime we hear other sounds, we can turn an ear to try to better understand what the sound is and where it comes from.

As we are prey it´s normal  always be attentive to all sounds, to understand where they can come from and whether they will harm us or not.

You may have noticed that we also shake our ears from time to time, you need to know if we do it because we have an infection , usually in these situations we shake and itch, in this case it is very important to go to the vet.

Another situation is when we are happy, there are humans who call it mini Binkies (have you seen what Binkies are? See here ), because we just shake our heads and that is why our ears wag all, in this case it is because we are very happy.

So what about bunnies with droopy ears?

These also do the same , but the truth is that you hardly notice it, you need to pay close attention and understand the rest of your body language very well to understand.
